Quick Accessibility Widget Install for Wix

Increase accessibility for your Wix-based website with the UserWay Widget. This guide walks you through installing UserWay’s Wix accessibility plugin, so more users can access and enjoy your website’s content.

Please note that the manual install is the same for EITHER the free UserWay Widget or the pro AI-Powered Accessibility Widget version. The Wix App Market install is only different because you will first find the free version in the App Market, and then you’ll have opportunities to upgrade later.

Before we get started with the Wix App Market installation, it’s important to mention that the Wix App Market install is your default option if you are a Wix user who has not yet registered for UserWay’s widget.

However, if you are already registered for UserWay’s widget before you begin installation, do not try to install via Wix Marketplace. You’ll need to scroll down to the manual installation instructions further down this page. This is how it works.

Whether you’ve already signed up for UserWay’s free widget, or you’re installing the plugin directly via Wix App Market, note that the paid UserWay AI-Powered Accessibility Widget will greatly improve your functional accessibility, as well as boosting your compliance with legal accessibility requirements.

For Wix users who are currently performing their first install of the app, you will also find options to upgrade directly within Wix once you’ve completed your installation.

Install the Widget Via Wix App Market

Step 1: Installing the Wix Plugin

Go ahead and sign into Wix under your admin name. Now that you’re logged into the Wix dashboard, you can install the UserWay plugin. This type of plugin is called an app in Wix. On the left-hand menu, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click “Apps.” Next, at the top right of the page, click on “Get More Apps.”

1 - Go to apps - click get more apps

You’re now in the Wix Marketplace. You’ll scroll under the headline and type “UserWay” in the search bar. You should be able to see our app – click on it. Next, click the “Add to Site” button, and a window will open. At the bottom of this pop-up, click the “Add to Site” button to confirm installation.

2 - type userway in search bar - click on userway app

3 - click on Add site - click add site again

Scroll down to enable the widget by toggling the On/Off button.

4 - enable widget

Step 2: Preview, Publish, and Customize Your Wix Widget

You’re all set! You can now publish your Wix website to implement changes. Do take a moment to check that your install went well and the plugin is working correctly. That was easy!

You can customize your widget via the Wix page widget, or by going to your UserWay Management Console. Access the available customization options for enhanced website accessibility in either of these places. Remember to hit “Save Settings” before leaving the page or widget area.

Generate an Accessibility Statement for Your Wix Website

Once you have installed your app via Wix, you can generate an accessibility statement for your Wix website, go to the Accessibility Statement tab on the UserWay dashboard (also called the UserWay Management Console), and fill out your details. Next, click the “Generate My Accessibility Statement” button. Then, check your email, where you should find your accessibility statement. If it’s not there immediately, refresh the page.

If your website requires more accessibility features or a higher level of WCAG compliance, consider UserWay’s AI-Powered Accessibility Widget, which may better suit your needs.

Wix Manual Installation Guide

Step 1: Register Your Wix Website with UserWay

To begin, register your Wix website with UserWay. You can find the “Start Free Trial” button on UserWay.org, at the top right.

If you’ve already registered an earlier website with UserWay, there’s no need to re-register. Simply add the new website to your list, and use the same code you used with your previous website. Remember, we have options for multi-site admins and owners, including large agencies.

Note: All of the manual tutorial uses the same method for both the FREE and pro UserWay Widget versions, from registration onward.

If you have the free version, keep in mind that the AI-Powered Accessibility Widget has entirely different features, and can greatly boost your accessibility.

Upgrade to the paid/pro AI-Powered Accessibility Widget version here.

To get your unique code snippet for the first time, follow all the registration steps. Then, copy the text and paste it somewhere you’ll find it, or save it in a document for easy retrieval.

If you’ve already registered with UserWay, you will have received a welcome email. Your unique code snippet will be in there.

You can also log into the UserWay dashboard, known as the UserWay Management Console, and click on “Embed Code” in the left nav menu. You’ll need to copy and paste this bit of text into your site to get your UserWay Wix plugin. This is your unique code snippet.

Your UserWay Management Console login username and password are also in the welcome email.

Step 2: Paste Your Unique Code in the Wix Dashboard

Once you’re in Wix, you’ll find the dashboard. On the left, you’ll go the menu and scroll down to “Settings”. You’ll be prompted to a new page with all the Settings options.

Scroll down to the “Advanced” section, where you’ll find the “Add Custom Code” button. Go ahead and click on it.

A new page appears. On the new page, at the top right, click the “Add Custom Code” button.

Next, in the window that pops up, paste the code snippet in the first text field.

Below, in the Name field, type “UserWay” to name it, so that it’s easier for you to identify later. Make sure the “Add code to all pages” radio button option is selected. You can choose whether your code will load once, or on each new page, in the dropdown.

Select “Place code in: Head” and we’re not done yet, so don’t click Apply yet.

First, scroll back up to “Code Type” and select the “Essential” option.

Now, scroll back down again to the “Apply” button. Click it!

Step 3: Check Install, Publish Your Plugin-Enabled Site, & Custom Options

You’re all set! We suggest that you preview your site. Once you make sure that the widget plugin is installed and working, feel free to publish your Wix website. This will pull in the changes from the UserWay Wix plugin.

If you wish to customize options for your widget, you can do that through the Wix widget, or via the UserWay Management Console. Either of these will present the ability to customize widget plugin options. Note: Click the “Save Settings” option before exiting the widget area or the page.

Note: UserWay’s AI-Powered Accessibility Widget offers much greater WCAG compliance, as well as many additional accessibility features.

Getting an Accessibility Statement for Your Website

Once you have installed the UserWay widget, you can generate an accessibility statement for your Wix website. For the manual install, note that you won’t find this option in Wix.

Instead, you can now go to the UserWay Management Console. Sign in.

Note: Before you continue, you’ll want to write up your accessibility statement. You can use our accessibility statement generator, located on the UserWay website. Then, check your email, where you should find your accessibility statement. If it’s not there, refresh the email browser.

Back in the UserWay Management Console, on the left, go to the navigation area and click My Sites. From the list that appears, click and select your site. If you only see one, that’s okay, that just means you have one site. A new mini window will appear. At the top of this mini window, you’ll see some tabs, beginning with “Overview”. The last tab on the right is Settings.

Click Settings. A new mini window will appear. Scroll down to “Accessibility Statement Link”, under “General Settings”.

Add your URL, and toggle whether you would like your accessibility statement to be shown, and whether you would like your accessibility statement to be enabled. You can also decide if you want to apply your accessibility statement to more than one of your registered sites. Click “Apply” or “Apply to all X sites”.
